Under Insight4’s project leadership this application has become a business application of high utility and importance across Transend Networks. The system integrates with Transend’s asset management system, generating error and fault reports and send them to internal and external parties such as NEMMCO. The project won a high commendation in the Transend's 2007 Chairman’s Award for Innovation.

Originally architected to simply replace pen and paper data entry, SMELT (Semi Manual Event Logging Tool) has today become one of the most important business applications in the Control Room, and is utilised by employees throughout Transend.

Delivered as a both a desktop and web-based application, SMELT provides significant improvements to Network Coordinators, enhancing their ability to log and monitor events in the control room and across Transend’s infrastructure.

Extending beyond the control room, SMELT has improved business processes and efficiency throughout Transend. This includes;

• Providing search and reporting capabilities to expedite Incident Reporting investigations on outages
  
• Assisting Performance Reporting analysis to enable Transend to identify service compliance conditions
  
• Saved countless hours for administrative staff by removing the need to manually scan in log sheets

Overall, SMELT is one of the most successful applications deployed into Network Operations, and its benefits are seen across Transend. It has formalised and simplified some of the many responsibilities undertaken by Network Coordinators, and has been positively adopted by all users. Any employee needing access to control room data can now simply generate electronic reports as opposed to searching through pages of log data by hand. For Transend, this has saved countless employee hours and provided enhanced levels of accurate data never before available to the organisation.
